How Mold Growth Can Affect Humans Added By: Administrative Assistant on 17-09-2015

Mold is a fungus that is found both indoors as well as outdoors.  There are over one hundred thousand different species of fungi.  Mold grows under conditions which are humid, warm and damp.  They spread out and reproduce by making spores.  Those spores can linger in even the harshest conditions that do not support normal mold growth.  Some of the common molds found indoors are Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus.  These molds are harmful to both your family as well as your home and should be removed as soon as detected.

Molds are found just about everywhere in our environment year round.  Outside mold can be found in shady, damp areas while inside mold can be found where the relative humidity is above seventy per cent such as basements and showers.  The nutrients required for mold growth are present in organic matter such as wood, paper and/or fabrics. It can also come from many synthetic products such as paint and adhesives.

Mold can be extremely harmful to humans.  They have the potential to cause serious side effects.  The side effects include inflammations/allergies, and/or infections in the body.  Mold can enter the body by either inhalation or ingestion.  It can also enter the body through the skin and become harmful depending on the toxicity, sensitivity of the person and period of time the individual has been exposed.  It has been shown that inhaled mold has a greater effect then being absorbed through the skin or by ingestion.  Symptoms of health problems due to mold have been nasal and sinus congestion, dry/hacking cough, soar throat, upper respiratory problems, burning or watery eyes, skin and eye irritation, blurred vision or sensitivity, chills/fever, memory problems, nose bleeds, breathing difficulties, mood changes, aches and pains, dermatitis, immune suppression, fatigue and headaches.  Mold affects infants and children too.  Infants that grow up within a home that has mold and mildew are more likely to develop respiratory illnesses such as asthma, pneumonia, and bronchitis since the infants immune systems develop in their first year of life.

In order to decrease mold exposure, sensitive individuals should stay away form areas with a high potential for mold growth, cut grass and wooded areas for example.  Keeping the humidity in your home between forty and sixty percent and ventilating showers and cooking areas can slow the production of mold.  To prevent mold you can use a dehumidifier, add mold inhibitors to your paint before the application, clean bathrooms with mold killing products, do not carpet bathrooms or basements and remove previously soaked carpets and upholstery.  The use of bleach dose not kill mold permanently.  Bleach will kill it temporarily but it will grow back and more then was originally there.  Although, if you have a mold problem then you most likely have a leak and should have a mold specialist come to your home for an inspection.
